Learning MySQL Part 2: MySQL History and Future of MySQL.

If the Learning MySQL Tutorial: Understanding MySQL and MySQL Excess tells about the advantages of MySQL compared with other RDBMS, Tutorial Learning MySQL: MySQL History and Future of MySQL we will discuss about the history, origins, stories, past and future of MySQL.

Stories about UNIREG and TCX
Stories about MySQL began in 1979, when Michael Widenius (aka Monty), a programmer from Sweden, developed a simple database system called UNIREG. UNIREG connections using low-level ISAM database engine with indexing (read: simple database system that supports the index).

Monty worked at a company called TcX in Sweden. TcX in 1994 began developing web-based applications, and plans to use UNIREG as database system. But unfortunately for Monty, UNIREG dianggagap not suitable for such dynamic web database.

TcX sought alternatives other database systems, one of which is MSQL (miniSQL), an RDBMS that is not too expensive and nearly open source, which means that if you buy this app, you will also get the source code as well. MySQL version 1 also has a drawback, which does not support indexing, so performance is not very good MySQL.

With high incitement TcX, Monty tried to contact David Hughes (programmer who developed MSQL) to ask if he was interested in developing a connector that can connect MSQL UNIREG ISAM thus supporting indexing. By the time Hughes refused, the grounds are developing technology that independent indexing to mSQL version 2.

Michael "Monty" Widenius

Because rejection David Hughes, TcX (and also Monty) has finally decided to design and develop their own concept of the new database system. This system is a combination of UNIREG and mySQL. in May 1995, a new RDBMS, called MySQL released.

David Axmark of Detron HB, TcX partners proposed that MySQL is sold to a new business model. He suggested that MySQL was developed and released for free. The next corporate earnings obtained from selling services "support" for companies that want to implement MySQL. The business concept is also applied to firms other Open Source.

The acquisition of MySQL AB by Sun Micosystem
Year 2008 is the end for MySQL AB as a stand-alone company, when Sun Microsystems bought MySQL AB for $ 1 billion. Should the acquisition process, the entire management of MySQL AB, to be part of the thousands of employees of other securities, including Michael Widenius (Monty) and David Axmark (2 founders of MySQL AB). But before long, they began to feel uncomfortable and often criticized the policies of the Suns, so they decided to resign from the company.

Marten Mickos, CEO of MySQL AB, who has led SUN MySQL also left in 2009. So MySQL has practically lost business leaders and founders who have made a successful MySQL now. And finally in April 2009, a giant in the industry databases: Oracle, Sun Microsystems began approaching to get it.

Save MySQL

The acquisition of Sun Microsystems (and MySQL) by Oracle Corporation
This movement at least managed to persuade Europe's anti-monopoly commission, to approve the acquisition on condition that Oracle MySQL to continue the project at least until 2015. But many observers say that the pressure is also done by Oracle that this acquisition will be smooth, so Oracle Corporation officially acquired Sun Microsystems (and also MySQL!) to US $ 7.4 trillion on January 27, 2010.

Oracle MySQL Logo

MySQL future
End of story, at least we can still use MySQL to 2015, according to the promise of Oracle. However, if the future of MySQL released for free, or become one of the products paid for by Oracle? we can only hope.

On the other hand, Monty Widenius, has quietly started a new project, MariaDB, which has the same basic code with MySQL 5.1. Do MariaDB is a "next generation" successor free MySQL RDBMS? or MariaDB will sink in among other RDBMS are also a lot of pop? Let us continue to follow developments.

The story is at least also be a picture of how the giant companies, such as Oracle, using capitalist kakuatan to "annex" rival to grow further. MySQL is now officially using oracle logo in its products.

For MySQL next tutorial we will discuss a little theory about the database, so it can be the basis for us before installing MySQL applications. Learning MySQL Tutorial: Understanding Databases, Database Model and RDBMS.
